Tucked away in the northwest corner of Tennessee lies a place that feels untouched by time: Reelfoot Lake. Formed by a series of violent earthquakes in the early 1800s, legend has it the Great Spirit himself stamped the earth to make it so. Today, it’s one of the most storied stops along the Mississippi Flyway and is a bucket list destination for waterfowlers who know their history.

Welcome to Reelfoot

Reelfoot Lake sits in the heart of the Mississippi Flyway, just a stone’s throw from the Kentucky border. It’s a shallow, sprawling body of water unlike anything else in the region and Tennessee’s only natural lake. Moss-draped cypress trees rise from the water, and cypress knees are abundant. Reelfoot is a mix of thick bottomland hardwoods, fertile farmland, and backwater bayous, all of which create a rich, diverse habitat for migrating ducks and geese. For waterfowlers chasing the flight south, Reelfoot is both a target and a turning point; a stopover that’s earned its reputation over generations.

What makes Reelfoot truly special isn’t just the ducks— it’s the community. From the hand-carved calls of the Glodo family to the old-timers swapping stories at the boat ramp, Reelfoot is a living time capsule of American waterfowling. It’s where old decoys still matter, old dogs still hunt, and old stories only get better with time.

The New Madrid Earthquakes

In the winter of 1811–1812, a series of massive earthquakes rocked the central United States. These were the New Madrid Earthquakes, which were powerful enough to cause the Mississippi River to flow backward. The ground buckled and sank, and the waters from the Mississippi rushed in to fill their void. What remained? Reelfoot Lake: a jagged, swampy expanse born out of chaos.

Chickasaw Legend

Chickasaw tradition tells a different story of Reelfoot’s creation. According to legend, the Great Spirit stamped the earth in anger, causing the land to sink and water to rush in, forming Reelfoot Lake. Some say it was punishment for a rebellious chief who tried to marry outside his tribe, while others view it as a spiritual reckoning. No matter the version of the story, the legend tells the wildness of the place– a sense that this land was touched by something greater, and that it still holds that energy today.

This is more than just a stop along the Flyway. This is Reelfoot. Stay tuned—we’ve got more stories to tell from the blind.
