How often are you taking your dog out into new environments?
Each week I always plan multiple outings with my dogs in training. Taking them to new places, with new smells, new people, and new dogs is key to a well rounded dog.
In this session with Maggie and Gus we worked on play in a very stimulating and distracting environment. Dogs can’t play if they are stressed, so I strive to teach them how to be relaxed and play in every environment to build their confidence!
When these dogs first showed up I could barely get them to play inside, especially if another dog was around. In this session you can see how well these dogs have opened up!

“I love the challenge of hunting public lands with Hank, my Golden Retriever. To me, the satisfaction is so much higher than hunting in a private field because you have less control over the environment.
When you’re hunting public lands, you hit the field knowing you might not get the spot you want to go to. It’s that way every morning. Sometimes you get out there and there’s a group of people in the spot you were aiming for– one of my favorite hunts was one where this happened. I started talking to them, and we decided to hunt together and it was a great experience. It’s cool to meet new people that way.
I trained Hank myself, primarily on public lands. The state of Tennessee does a great job managing properties for field trials and public training grounds. Dog days of summer🔥
On Sunday we made the drive down to the Bucks-Montgomery Coon Club for their ukcdogs Bench Show and Field Trial. Had a great time, and the dogs did good. Lina got both line and tree in the champion’s heat of the field trial. And ole Blitz was awarded best of class and best of breed, earning him more points towards his show champion title.
This club is one of the oldest sportsmen clubs in Pennsylvania. I enjoyed looking at all the old photos hanging on the clubhouse walls. Lots of history!

"Earlier this year I flew up to Canada with Chevy. I had an epic bucket list trip with Gunner in Saskatchewan his last season – it’s the hunt that inspired this year’s Flyway Series ‘24 release. We were headed back to give Chevy his first go in the area and capture the Saskatoon collection in the process. It surpassed my expectations.
It was fun to get to hunt with him in the spring right out of turkey season and the longer we hunted, the more fun the trip got. Chevy picked up close to 40 birds each day, including some that were about a mile away. It was a little tricky for him, because every retrieve was a total blind but he absolutely killed it. I was proud of him and I think our bond was really evident in how we trusted each other with each retrieve.
The very last one of the trip was a banded bird, and it was one of those rare moments where everyone was super hyped up. The bird had covered the whole flyway up to Alaska, so it was cool to see it all tie together to the Flyway Series."

What a weekend my crew had! Christmas in July at WestRover Water Sports & Agility Club may have been rainy, but it was great to see everyone again and to get to spend a weekend doing what we love!!
Bo debuted in Hydrodash! He was more impressed with everyone watching him swim back than trying to set a good time 🤣 but he did great and we had fun! He had a very strong Air Retrieve run and ALMOST snagged that 17’ jump!
Frank also debuted in Hydrodash and is basically a fish! He was .01 seconds slower than Lex on his first run and hasn’t conditioned for it at all! He also debuted in Air Retrieve where he had a 12’ grab after only making it to 9’ in practice! He also had a personal best distance jump of 14’ 9”! I have no doubt he’ll be in Senior REALLY soon!
GRIT GOT HER DOCK NOVICE ADVANCED TITLE!! I’m so incredibly proud of her! We’re hoping this secures her invite to regionals along side Bo, Lex, and Tate!
Lex set a personal best distance jump of 27’ 3” today! He’s super fun to watch fly across the water! He had a very strong performance in Air Retrieve as well making a grab at 18’!
Tate!! TATE GOT HIS DOCK MASTER ADVANCED TITLE today right along side his mom! That was such a great feeling to see them get the same achievement together! He also competed in Air Retrieve and Hydrodash and threw consistent times and distance scores! He’s my little mister consistent!
I could not have asked for a better crew!! Their hearts are still on the dock! I’m blessed beyond words to be on the path I’m on with these guys and the people supporting us! Thank you to every single person for the kind words, great laughs, and support everyone has shown!!

“Fishing with my two pups is my favorite thing in the world– it is so dang special to share my greatest passion with the loves of my life. My older dog, Alberto, was hesitant at first, but over the past few years, he’s gained a lot of confidence. Now, he loves to prop his paws up on the side of my raft and take in the scenery as we float. On the other hand, my younger Griffon pup, Shakira, was fearless from the start, even trying to get up close and personal with the fish.
What I admire most about my dogs is how they are always living in the present moment. They have no to-do list, they don’t worry about tomorrow, and instead they only think about the moment at hand. Fishing with them helps me do the same. It clears my mind, and having them by my side enhances the experience in the most glorious way. When I wade fish, the two of them run around and explore the area. It's freedom at its finest! When we’re in the boat, they snooze, sniff a fish if we catch one, and take in the peaceful views as we drift by.
Since Alberto was initially apprehensive about the boat, I found that getting him comfortable in short spurts was key. I fed him on the boat, kept things fun and happy, and made sure he always had a good time. Instead of taking long trips, we started with hour-long floats, focusing on making it a positive experience for him rather than fishing. It took some patience, but it was so worth it. Now we get to share time on the water and even go on multi-day float/fishing trips.
The best part has been the shared experience. My dogs are my best friends, and combining our time together with my passion for fishing has been remarkable. Getting skunked on the river with my pups beats lights-out fishing without them any day of the week. Fish or no fish, being out there with my two dogs is nothing short of a dream come true. It's been so special to see them learn, grow, and fall in love with the river just as I did so many years ago. It is the greatest way I have found to spend my days, and I feel confident they would say the same if they could.” –Gloria Goñi, GUNNER Pack Member

“Don’t cheap out on a single-wall kennel. You’re saving $100 for nothing.
My black lab Hitch and I were in Fort Worth headed back from Arlington on a 4-lane highway. We were cruising around 75 mph when all of a sudden a car cut across 3 lanes, got behind the vehicle in front of us, and slammed on its brakes because they got too close. I had about 5 feet to stop at that point, so there wasn’t much I could do to avoid a collision. I remember trying to hit the brakes but hit him almost immediately which threw us into the far left shoulder.
I never lost consciousness, but I got smoked with the airbags so I was a bit dazed. There was an off-duty officer behind us who saw the whole thing, and by the time I gathered myself and opened the door, he was running up to check on me. The cop tried to stop me to have me sit down but I remember telling him, “I don’t know where we are, but I have to check on my dog.” I dropped the tailgate to open the kennel door and Hitch walked out like nothing happened. The only way you could tell the kennel was in an accident was that it had moved a few inches forward from the impact. Hitch was a little shaken up but thankfully didn’t have a single scratch on him.
For being in an accident going over 70 mph, the kennel only moving a few inches is just crazy. I put Hitch back in the kennel until the first responders got there. After that, he got to hang out in the fire truck which is pretty cool. The Gunner and the F-150 did their jobs, to say the least. It’s funny, both of them have a 5-star crash rating so the way they both performed shouldn’t be surprising.
When I got Hitch, the breeder had a single-wall kennel and told me to buy a similar one simply because they were cheaper. I took one look and knew the quality wasn’t anywhere near that of a Gunner. Buy a Gunner. Don’t cheap out on a single-wall kennel. You’re saving $100 for nothing. My brother and I both have kennels and now my stepdad is getting one. If the price point is keeping you from buying one, I am a testimony on why you should go ahead and get it. They are obviously worth the price. " - Hunter B., GUNNER Pack Member
