Travel Tips From the GUNNER Team

Our GUNNER team members have logged thousands of miles on the road with their dogs. We asked them for their best tips to share with anyone gearing up for a road trip with their dogs, and they delivered.

Travel Tips From the GUNNER Team

Koda | Labrador Retriever | 70 lbs | G1™ Intermediate

"I travel with Koda pretty often, and the night before we leave I always take him to the park for a long session of playing fetch. I feel like even the night before I can tell a difference in how he travels. I also try to either give him a nice topper on his food before we leave or a pup cup once we hit the road as a little exciting treat to kick off the trip." –Bobby, GUNNER Industrial Designer

River | Golden Retriever | 55 lbs | G1™ Intermediate

"I always stop at Buc-ee's. There is one almost exactly in the middle of my 3.5 hour drive back to Birmingham. They have a pretty long dog walking track and its separated from the store, so you can get in and out without dealing with all of the Bucee's madness. I can feed/water/run him, and be back on the road in about 15 minutes. Always leave the house with your bowl filled with water, and if you plan to feed, the correct amount of food in a bowl ready to go. For trips under 6 hours, finding a halfway point and knocking it all out in one go is super nice."  – Brent, GUNNER CX Representative

Tuli | English Cocker Spaniel | 20 lbs | G1™ Small

"I always stop at Love's for gas when I can. They typically have fenced off areas for dogs, and it's great for Tuli to stretch her legs and spend some time off-leash before we get back on the road." – Rylee, GUNNER Brand Specialist

Hank | Golden Retriever | 72 lbs | G1™ Intermediate

"Bring a bumper– if you stop at a rest stop, throw it around for the dog for a minute or two so they don't grow to resent riding in the kennel." –Matthew, GUNNER Senior Accountant

Dexter | Labrador Retriever | 80 lbs | G1™ Large

"I keep things simple with Dex on road trips. I make sure to air him out every 2-3 hours, especially for his hips and joints. Given how much I work him, I want to do everything I can to keep those joints as healthy as possible—I believe it pays off in the long run." – Luke, GUNNER Brand Specialist

Waylon | Golden Retriever | 65 lbs | G1™ Intermediate

"We always make sure to wear Waylon out with a long walk or throwing the ball before we hop in the car for a road trip. If we need to stop we always try to find somewhere that has some green space!" – Virginia, GUNNER VP of CX

Deuce | Hound Mix | 70 lbs | G1™ Intermediate
Boone | Labrador Retriever | 60 lbs | G1™ Intermediate

"For long trips, I like Deuce and Boone to be as tired as possible before putting them in the kennel, so we'll spend some time playing fetch, tug-of-war, etc., before heading out. I also prefer to drive while the sun is still up because Deuce gets anxious traveling at night." – Holloway, GUNNER CX Representative
