Jake. My first personal dog Fitz is only 4 years old, so he’ll eventually be the one I never forget. But my twin brother Neill’s dog Jake – a black male British lab – was our first dog between us. He was a stud and eventually the beginning of Mossy Oak Kennels through his son Timbo.
Ducks. Specifically, mallards. There’s a timber hole not far behind our family’s cabin in West Point, MS that floods a few times a season. When it’s loaded with mallards, it’s my favorite place to hunt.
Dogs have always been a part of our family. We’ve had retrievers since I was a kid, and I’ll hopefully never have to go a season without my own. Every day at home whether hunting or not has been spent with a dog. I also may be subliminally drawn to retrievers from my days as a kid retrieving doves for the people hunting with a dog and being rewarded with string cheese and Vienna sausages. Everyone needs a good dog.
WITHOUT my dog – when my brother and I were kids, we were the designated retrievers for whoever sat without a dog. We were rewarded with treats (string cheese and Vienna sausages).
Belgian Malinois. A war dog. They’re the most common Navy SEAL combat dogs and probably have the coolest canine job on earth.
Two things: Don’t procrastinate with a young dog. The early days are some of the most formative days. Time you invest with basic training at a young age will pay off later when your dog is otherwise older and more stubborn. And treat your dog like a member of the family, not just an accessory to hunting season. Hunting season is only a small part of the year.
My granddad. Papaw to me and Mr. Fox to everyone else. Family, hunting, gamekeeping, whatever – there are too many adjectives to list here to describe what makes him a good man. He’s as honorable and patient as can be, and he’s a mentor in the woods, in family, in business. He said, “I believe the good men do will live long after we’re gone,” and he cares after land, wildlife and family in a way that leaves everything and everyone better for knowing him.
