The Prairie Pothole Region: North America's Duck Factory
Saskatchewan’s landscape is dotted with thousands of small wetlands, remnants of glacial activity that have become vital breeding grounds for waterfowl. These "potholes" fill with snowmelt each spring, creating ideal conditions for nesting ducks and geese. This unique ecosystem is so crucial that it supports 50-80% of North America's breeding duck population, earning its nickname as the continent's "duck factory."
DUC's Approach: Working with the Land and Its People
Recognizing that the majority of Saskatchewan’s land is privately owned, DUC has developed innovative programs that align with the values of local landowners, predominantly farmers. Their approach is twofold, focusing on both land acquisition and management, as well as private land partnerships. DUC acquires and manages key parcels of land, preserving wetlands and upland areas crucial for wildlife. They've also created collaborative programs that support both agricultural needs and wildlife conservation, striking a balance that benefits both the land and its people.
This strategy has been remarkably effective. To date, DUC has influenced the conservation of over 6 million acres of habitat across Canada, demonstrating the power of partnerships in achieving conservation goals. By working hand-in-hand with local communities, DUC has shown that conservation and agriculture can not only coexist but thrive together.
Wetland Restoration
DUC's wetland restoration program is revolutionizing conservation efforts in Saskatchewan. It turns out that, where desired, previously drained wetlands can be brought back to life with remarkable speed. The process begins with identifying drained wetlands, often marked by telltale drainage ditches. DUC then works to plug these ditches, effectively damming the water's escape route. When spring arrives, snowmelt fills these basins, and biodiversity quickly returns.
A recent restoration project in eastern Saskatchewan resulted in 260 acres of re-flooded wetland, demonstrating the significant impact that targeted restoration efforts can have on the landscape. It's a testament to the resilience of nature and the effectiveness of DUC's "just add water" approach to wetland restoration.
