Story by Mat Schauer of Northern Skies Outfitters

Part of what makes spring hunting in Saskatoon special is that this area is the snow geese’s last stop before they go to their nesting ground. It’s like clockwork – I can pinpoint almost to the day when they’ll arrive and when they’ll leave. It doesn’t matter what the weather is like, that’s where nature tells them to be for that period of time to prepare for nesting. They stay in Saskatoon for a while to eat as much as they can and get their fat reserves up before they fly over the forest and sit on their nests for thirty days.

Anyone in the U.S. knows how hard it is to decoy an adult snow goose, which is part of what makes hunting in Saskatoon so unique; since they’re eating so aggressively and know they have to get the calories, they’re much easier to decoy. It’s pretty incredible– once they’re locked in on a food source, they just do everything you want them to do. It’s unlike hunting anywhere else.

You build a lot of confidence in your relationship with your dog when you’re in the field. You’re hunting low cut fields, and when a bird falls, it’s easy for both you and your dog to see even if it’s 400 yards away. In Saskatoon you can get 20 snow geese per person, so the amount of potential retrieves for your dog is huge. The dog can gain fifteen days of experience over the course of two days in Saskatoon. That experience can’t be replicated anywhere else.

Hunting in Saskatoon is absolutely a bucket list trip. If you called me asking for a spring snow goose hunt, I’d encourage you to go to Saskatoon because it’s the kind of trip that’s memorable for all of the right reasons. We hear stories all the time of trips people will never forget because it was freezing cold or they never got any birds; that’s not the case in Saskatoon.

Giving Back

For every Saskatoon Kennel, Food Crate, or Bowl that our GUNNER customers purchase, we will be giving a portion of proceeds back to Ducks Unlimited Canada.
