Stories From Anahauc: Ducks Unlimited’s Work in Southeast Texas | GUNNER Flyway Series

Habitat restoration and conservation is essential to preserving Texas’ fish and wildlife resources, which is why the work and education of the Ducks Unlimited organization in the state is so important. We are donating a portion of proceeds of the Anahuac Flyway Series collection sales to DU Texas, and matching customer donations $1 for $1 to Ducks Unlimited organization.

PRESERVING TEXAS LAND AND TRADITION:

In 1937 – during the Dust Bowl when drought conditions caused a major decrease in wetland habitat and waterfowl populations – a small group of hunters banded together to kickstart Ducks Unlimited, with the aim to reverse the trends they were seeing and give light to the issues causing them.

Today, the country’s largest wetland conservation organization conserves, enhances, and restores habitats that benefit waterfowl, other wildlife, and people – championing over 15 million acres of habitat conservation in North America.

Nearly 270,000 of those acres are in Texas alone, with DU putting many boots on the ground to help waterfowl populations flourish and provide a recharge and purification to groundwater. Primary waterfowl species that benefit from DU’s efforts include the blue-winged teal, mallard, green-winged teal, mottled duck, snow geese, and more.

DON’T MESS WITH TEXAS:

Jason McKey, Senior Regional Director for Houston / Southeast Texas at Ducks Unlimited, highlights what makes their work so impactful in this region:

“We have lost thousands of habitat acres up and down the Texas Gulf Coast. There are now neighborhoods and retail spaces where once pristine wetlands and agriculture fields blanketed the landscape. These habitats are very important to the lifecycle of wintering waterfowl and play a critical role in making sure that when the birds are ready to head north for the nesting cycle, they are in good shape to make that journey."

Wetlands are North America’s most productive ecosystems, and provide critical habitat to more than 900 million wildlife species and invaluable recreation opportunities for people to enjoy – like making sure there’s still ample hunting opportunities in Anahuac, the area that inspired the 2022 Flyway Series collection.

EVERYONE LOVES TEXAS TEAL:

McKey grew up in Southeast Texas, hunting in and around the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge. And there seems to be one bird in particular that holds nostalgic memories for those like him:

“Texas, especially the Texas Gulf Coast, is the heart of the wintering grounds for migrating waterfowl. I have so many great memories there and in fact harvested my first duck, a blue-winged teal on the refuge. There is no better bird to highlight for this area. The blue-winged teal is the most predominant species here along the Texas Gulf Coast and still one of my favorite birds to harvest.”
