Alternative Food Crate Use: Cocktail Pitcher

We have an alternative use idea for our GUNNER Food Crate! An 11-gallon pitcher to hold your cocktails. Here’s the margarita recipe we’re making this Cinco de Mayo... and all summer.

Alternative Food Crate Use: Cocktail Pitcher

While we agree that the right tequila paired with orange liqueur and fresh lime juice (here’s a brief history of the drink) makes a damn good margarita, we wanted to tinker with one of our warm-weather drinks of choice as summer begins to kick into gear. So we called up our guy in Houston, John Dunaway. He said sure, no problem, I just made a big batch the other day. But the margarita I swear by really isn’t my own. I have to phone a friend and ask if we can share his recipe.

That friend happened to be Morgan ”Best friend. Fellow hunter. Expert booze hound.” Weber. If you’re not his amigo, you may know Morgan as the owner of Houston’s Eight Row Flint bar.

So yeah, we lucked out. Without further ado, here’s Morgan’s margarita, the one to make when you’re looking to impress somebody.

Weber’s Margarita Recipe

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 1/2 ounces 110-proof silver tequila
  • 3/4 ounce orange curaçao
  • 1 ounce fresh-squeezed lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce lime oleo saccharum*
  • drop pasteurized egg white
  • 2 dashes salt tincture**
  • ½ thick lime wheel (for serving)

PREPARATION

STEP 1: To create the lime oleo saccharum: In a bowl, muddle 1 cup of packed lime peels with 2 cups sugar. Cover and infuse in the refrigerator overnight.

STEP 2: Add 1 cup water to the infused sugar and stir to dissolve. Strain and store in the refrigerator (for up to two weeks).

STEP 3: To create the salt tincture: Stir 1/3 cup of salt into 1/3 cup warm water until salt is dissolved.

STEP 4: Combine all above ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously with ice to chill. Strain onto fresh ice in a highball glass. Garnish with a lime wheel.

Fact: this recipe pairs well with the Tequila Toast.

FINAL STEP: Raise the glass and toast to the health of your drinking friends with an Arriba (glasses up); abajo (glasses down); al centro (glasses to the front, wish health to everyone participating in the toast); y pa’ dentro! (take a drink).

Fact: 11 gallons is a lot of margarita.

Do we need to tell you that feeding your dogs margaritas is a really bad idea? Or that we do not advise that you drink 11 gallons of margarita on your own? We hope not. If you do use this idea to utilize the GUNNER Food Crate as a cocktail pitcher, clean it before you re-use it as a dog food storage container. We recommend washing the Food Crate with distilled white vinegar for a longer soak.
